Accidents happen. But we're not talking about fender-benders this time; we mean the kind where you stop short and your coffee cup goes flying to the floor. There's no shortage of cleaning products, so ask your dealer what's appropriate for your car. Using dealer-approved products will make the job easier, faster, and make sure the fluids won't harm your surfaces. Chemicals can be unpredictable, though, so just to be safe, test the product on an inconspicuous spot before treating the affected area. Have questions? An automatic transmission is your car’s beating heart. Standard on most new cars, it allows gears to speed up without you making adjustments. Even though Toyota faced both an internal crisis (lack of quality control in 2010) and an external crisis (Japan’s earthquake in early 2011), the company forged ahead by focusing on safety and quality, modifying its leadership structure and capitalizing on its world-renown green efforts. Hit the brakes. Hear anything? You shouldn’t. Braking noise indicates a problem. Screeching, grinding or pulsating noises can indicate worn brake pads or damaged components. Noise doesn’t always occur when braking, either; a persistent squealing while driving down the road is a warning from your worn brake pads. What’s that in the gas station window? A hot dog? A special on Cokes? You can’t help yourself. It’s a long ride ahead, so you grab a few and hit the road. Enjoy them, but make sure wrappers and bottles are disposed of properly. Environmental concerns aside, trash can migrate under your feet and interfere with pedals and brakes. The back seat is usually enough to guard against this, but just to be safe, stow trash in a plastic bag. There are enough surprises on the road—make sure there are none in your car!

Your headlights should be bright and colorless. If they’re hazy or yellow, then your lenses need replacing. Here’s what happened. Lenses are made from a polycarbonate material. It’s more durable than glass, but it oxidizes in sunlight and accumulates thousands of minute nicks from road debris. Over time, this makes your lights appear cloudy. Since headlights are your first line of defense for night driving, visit your dealer mechanic today to get clear, safe lenses.
